The area

Estaou Treillo sits at Saint-Victor, 1 impasse du Guerret, in the commune of Le Monastier-sur-Gazeille, Haute-Loire. This is the Velay: a mid-mountain plateau, stone villages with tiled roofs, and open views over the sucs.

The land of the sucs

The sucs are those pointed hills, remnants of vast volcanic activity. Summer and winter they make majestic landscapes: forests, pastures, stone crosses, a village in a fold of the land, a cloud caught on the Mézenc.

These mountains are old, and they allow pleasant walks and hikes that are not too hard on the legs. Around Saint-Victor you walk in quiet, between hollow lanes and views of the Mézenc and the Meygal. This is not a theme-park backdrop: it is a lived-in farming country, where you still hear bells and the wind.

The Velay, still a wild nature

The Velay is one of the wildest regions in France. It holds a great diversity of flowers, countless streams, and the Loire still a mountain torrent. In spring the pastures fill; in summer evenings stay cooler than in the valley; autumn gilds the sucs; in winter snow can lie on the heights.

Saint-Victor remains a hamlet. The two 4-star furnished cottages share this setting: silence, tiled roofs, the sucs in the distance. The pace is not that of a resort. You come to walk, to rest, and to watch the plateau. From the hamlet the paths start without crossing a busy tourist zone: little traffic, open sky, and the chance to return to the cottage between outings.

Saint-Victor and Le Monastier-sur-Gazeille

Estaou Treillo is in Saint-Victor, part of Le Monastier-sur-Gazeille. Le Monastier is a characterful Velay town, known as the historic starting point of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1878 journey — now the GR 70, the Stevenson trail. Guides: Stevenson Trail, winter in the Velay, Le Puy-en-Velay.

The path is said to be about 500 m from the cottages [TO VALIDATE]. The cottages sit around 1,000 to 1,100 m [TO VALIDATE]. Le Monastier-sur-Gazeille is about 5 km away [TO VALIDATE].
